Submitting a question for Ask the Psychologist
Our Ask the Psychologist column answers questions sent in by readers — about a pattern you have noticed in yourself, a relationship that keeps going the same way, a diagnosis you are trying to understand. Send yours through the form with “Ask the Psychologist” in the subject line.
A few things worth knowing before you write:
- We answer questions publicly, in general terms, using published research. We never publish your name, email address or any identifying detail, and we edit or combine questions so no one is recognisable.
- We cannot answer every question, and we cannot say how long it will take. Do not wait on us if something needs attention now.
- Please do not send medical records, test results, or details about another person who has not agreed to it.
What we cannot do
Behavior Secrets is an educational publication, not a clinical service. Nobody here can assess you, diagnose you, treat you, or advise you on medication — no matter how much detail you send. An answer from us is general information, never personal psychological or medical advice, and it is no substitute for a licensed professional who knows your history. See our Disclaimer for the full position.
If you need help now
Please do not use this form in an emergency. Messages are not monitored around the clock and may sit unread for days. If you are thinking about harming yourself or someone else, or you are in immediate danger, contact your local emergency number right away — 911 in the United States, 999 in the United Kingdom, 112 across the European Union.
- United States: call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or text HOME to 741741.
- United Kingdom and Ireland: call 116 123 (Samaritans), free, any hour.
- Anywhere else: findahelpline.com lists free, confidential helplines by country.
To find ongoing care rather than crisis support, the APA Psychologist Locator and FindTreatment.gov list licensed providers in the United States.
Corrections and editorial concerns
If you spot a factual error, an outdated citation, or a claim that does not match the source, tell us and we will check it against the original research. Corrections are handled the way our Editorial Policy describes, and material corrections are noted on the article itself.
